Guatemala Needs Our Help
Guatemala is a predominantly poor country of approximately 16.5 million people who struggle in several areas of health and development, including infant, child, and maternal mortality, malnutrition, literacy, and contraceptive awareness and use. The country's large indigenous population is disproportionately affected.
More than half of Guatemala's population is below the national poverty line, and 23% of the population lives in extreme poverty. The indigenous groups make up more than 40% of the population and their poverty level averages 79%, with 40% of the indigenous population living in extreme poverty. Of greatest concern is that nearly one-half of Guatemala's children under age five are chronically malnourished, one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. We believe education provides a path to a better life for these children and families.
